The voluntary sector is being encouraged to play an ever more important role in providing services to the consumer. Many organisations have applied for (and now hold) Community Legal Service contracts to enable them to give expert advice and assistance under the Legal Aid scheme for which they will be paid.
They provide excellent quality service for those who cannot afford a lawyer or seek specialist advice in specific areas.
We look at what they do, where to find them and related links so you can find where they are near you.
The Citizen Advice Bureaux offer free help on a range of legal topics and most have Solicitors on call at public sessions most weeks. These sessions are free as are most of the services provided by the CAB. As well as helping you with your divorce, children and finances they also offer expert advice on Welfare benefits debt management and consumer problems.
The Citizens Advice Bureau Service offers free, independent and confidential advice. It celebrated it's Diamond Jubilee in 1999: from its origins in 1939 as an emergency service during World War II, it has evolved into a professional national agency.

Law Centres provide a free and independent professional legal service to people who live or work in their catchment areas.
Law Centres were to set up to overcome the obstacles faced by people who need access to the legal system. Free, publicly provided legal advice should be available to everyone, not just to those with financial resources or to those few that can get legal aid because of their income, there are many areas of law where legal aid is simply not available. This means that even in areas where fundamental rights are in dispute there is no access to the legal system.
